First Time Renting Off-Campus? Learn from My Ups and Downs

Hey there, future renter (hopefully on Elev)! Renting off-campus for the first time is like stepping into a whole new world. Trust me, I've been there. You get a taste of freedom, adventure, and—yeah, yeah—a dash of adulting. But hindsight is 20/20, so here are some things I wish I'd known.
1. Do Your Homework 📚
I won't lie, I rushed into my first rental and ended up with a 10-minute hike to the nearest bus stop. Not fun in winter, let me tell you. So, take the time to really dive deep into different neighbourhoods, figure out your commute, and get a vibe for local rent prices. Trust me, you'll thank yourself later.
2. Budget Like a Pro 💰
Newsflash: Renting isn't just about covering your monthly rent. You've got utilities, internet, groceries, and maybe a Netflix subscription because—priorities. So, get your Excel on and make a budget. It saved me when my parking fees suddenly went up.
3. Phone a Friend 📞
Don't underestimate the power of a good ol' heart-to-heart with someone who's been there, done that. Whether it's a senior, a family member, or some random on Reddit, people have pearls of wisdom you won't find on a lease agreement.
4. Decode Your Lease 📜
Legal jargon can be a headache, but it's worth cracking that lease agreement wide open. I wish I had; I could've had a pet for just a little extra cash. So, read it, question it, and understand it.
5. Be BFFs with Your Landlord 👫
Okay, maybe not BFFs, but be on good terms. A smooth line of communication can make your life so much easier. I had a leaky faucet fixed in no time because my landlord and I were on the same page.
6. YouTube University 🛠️
Major repairs are for the pros, but small stuff? You can totally handle that. Learning to change a light bulb or unclog a drain can be a lifesaver when you're in a pinch.
7. Pics or It Didn't Happen 📸
Document everything when you move in and out. I didn't, and let's just say it made for a sticky situation with my security deposit. So, snap photos, jot down notes, and keep your landlord in the loop.
