e know moving is as much of an exciting experience as it can be a stressful one.Use the following checklist before moving to your new place, so you don’t forget some of the most important steps when it comes to moving. We hope this helps your moving experience be as smooth as it can be.

Notify your landlord that you plan on moving out. This is usually to be done 30-days prior to moving.

Start eating what’s in your freezer and in your pantry. The lesser amount of food left is the lesser amount you will have to move on move out day.Think of it as a new fresh start, clear out the old and make space for the new.

Go through everything you own.Cleanse your drawers and closet.Decide what you want to take with you and what you want to get rid of.Sort out everything and get rid of any unwanted stuff you might have accumulated over the years.Sell the valuable things online, donate things that can be reused and take the rest to the dump.

Start collecting moving supplies like boxes and newspapers for wrapping. Most bus/train stations in Edmonton have newspaper bins you can take from for free. You can also go to the liquor stores or liq uor depots to get free boxes. They have piles of them and they are usually quite strong as they carry bottles.

Ask your friends and family for help.Make sure you give them as much time as possible to prepare for the day you will need them.If you ask them last minute you might find yourself short a couple of hands.Make sure you also clear your schedule and book the day off work.In Canada, your employer is obliged to let you take the day off if you need to move, you simply have to inform them beforehand.Update your mailing address and subscriptions. Here is a run down of accounts you might want to update.Your banking information, your work contact info, your gym membership, your school contact information, your car/home/tenant insurance, and finally take a look at changing your driver’s license address.

Deal with utilities before you move.Consider what you’ll want up and running as soon as you move in.Electricity, gas, and water will be top of the list followed closely by TV and internet service.Call your providers to either end the services, or book an appointment to relocate your services on the day or following your move.Transfer all of your utilities before you move to make the transition as seamless as possible. Now is also a great time to do some research and decide if you want to change providers, check who can offer you better deals and discounts.Check the location of your new home and consider the best way to reach the place. If you are making cross country moves or international moves, you’ll want to book the flight tickets for your family and pets or make proper travel arrangements. You may also need to rent a van or simply call up some friends and family and see if anyone is available to give you a hand on yo ur moving day.

Start packing your things and start with what you use less often. Also don’t forget to fill a suitcase with the clothes/necessities you might need in the next couple of days since you probably won't take the time to unpack everything right away and you want to be certain to have these things available all in one location when needed.Consider labelling your boxes to keep everything organized. This helps for an easy unpacking, and you’ll know exactly where to find the things if you need something immediately at your new place. If you live or are moving in an apartment/condo ask to book an elevator and confirm parking arrangements for your moving vehicle, if applicable.

On your move in day, do a final sweep and check that you took all the furniture and that all your cupboards are empty. All rooms, closets, cabinets have been checked for remaining items.Check again and make sure that you’re not leaving behind any important thing.

Once all your things are moved, go back to your old place and thoroughly clean and repair anything that needs attention in order to get your damage deposit back.

Finally, take the time to settle into your new home and maybe plan a housewarming party! This is a pretty exciting time.Invite friends, family, and/or coworkers to your new home, get some decoration ideas and have fun! You did it!..
